‘Tropical Orchids without the Heat’ was the topic of a very interesting talk by our guest speaker Andre Bannister. Despite the general idea that tropical orchids require a lot of warmth Andrew showed through his presentation that the key to growing orchids at lower temperatures was the elevation were the naturally occur. Those growing in cloud forests in mountain areas require less warmth than those found in rain forests at low altitude. By careful choice of plants one can build a collection which require little heating, a welcome thought in this age of high energy costs.
Bryan Adams took the top spot at this month’s table show with his specimen Epidendrum hugomedinae.
